Adams County Office for Aging, Inc.

This is a private, non-profit agency dedicated to assisting and advocating for Adams County residents age 60 and over. Care managers coordinate services to ensure that residents’ needs are met in the most effective manner possible. Care managers will conduct assessments to determine eligibility for services.

Level of Care Assessment: any resident of Adams County, age 18 and over, seeking medical assistance for long-term care in a facility or home and community-based services must be assessed by a care manager. The assessment and the individual’s financial eligibility will determine the location of care which will meet the consumer’s needs.

Home Delivered Meals: lunchtime meals are provided to functionally disabled, homebound, or convalescent persons age 60 and over who are unable to prepare their own meals. For those living outside the delivery area, boxes of frozen meals may be available.

Personal Care Services
: they subcontract with several home health agencies to provide personal care services. They provide help with personal care and daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, getting in and out of bed, meal preparation, and limited housekeeping. These services are generally provided 2-3 days per week for a few hours, depending upon the level of care needed. There are cost limits to the amount of service provided; this service is subject to cost-sharing.

Caregiver Support Program
: caregivers may receive reimbursement toward the cost of services and supplies as well as home modification and adaptive equipment. Household income is used to determine eligibility.

Protective Services:
any person age 60 and over who is an Adams County resident and is suspected to be a victim of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or abandonment may be referred for a protective services investigation. Staff are on call 24/7 to receive and investigate protective service reports. Confidentiality is assured for those who report the need for an investigation. Protect Service Helpline: 800-490-8505.

Pennsylvania Medicare Education and Decision Insight (PA MEDI)
: provides free assistance to seniors to help them understand Medicare eligibility, benefits, supplemental insurance, and prescription drug coverage. Counselors explain Medicare rights, benefits, and coverage options. Trained volunteers and staff educate eligible beneficiaries about programs including Medicare, Medicaid, Supplemental Insurance, Medicare Advantage, PACE, and other related programs. They also provide counseling on low-income and prescription drug assistance programs, including helping clients determine eligibility.

Transportation:
for those over age 65, transportation is provided by the rabbittransit system through a contract with this agency. The agency will pay to provide necessary transportation to senior centers, adult day programs, grocery trips, medical appointments, pharmacies, laundromats, libraries, and banks. Trips to other locations are provided at a fee, the rider is required to pay 15% of the service cost.

Tax Assistance Program:
this program is in cooperation with the United Way of Adams County and provides free tax services. They can address tax issues for most middle to low-income taxpayers aged 60 and over. From February to mid-April AARP counselors trained on federal, state, and local returns are available on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s. Those seeking tax assistance should bring copies of their prior-year tax returns, along with any current tax booklets/forms, W2s, 1099s, Social Security earning statements, property taxes, rent rebate receipts, and any other relevant documents.

Legal Services:
they can provide referrals to individuals who are low income and unable to afford legal fees on their own. Examples of the legal services provided include preparation of wills, powers of attorney, and living wills.

Senior Centers:
senior centers are places where individuals can gather, participate in activities, learn, and receive support. They provide workshops, health and wellness programs, and more to enrich the lives of older residents. To view all locations, visit this page: https://acofa.org/seniorcenters/

Memory Support:
they offer a caregiver support group for individuals who are caring for someone living with a dementia diagnosis. They also provide robotic pets to individuals with dementia diagnosis to combat loneliness and social isolation.
