Area on Aging – Luzerne and Wyoming Counties

The Area on Aging Programs aim to enhance the quality of life for all mature adults (aged 60+) by encouraging independence, promoting healthy lifestyles, and ensuring safety and protection throughout their life journey. They provide a variety of services throughout Luzerne and Wyoming counties for residents.

Active Adult Centers serve as a place for older adults in Luzerne and Wyoming counties to share a nutritious lunch and health screenings. Also provided are education programs about ID theft, credit counseling, how to manage chronic conditions and injury prevention and evidence based wellness programs. Center programs also focus on exercise, fitness, walking and groups, health fairs, nutrition information, health awareness and medication management. A variety of other programs are available including travel, fine arts, arts and crafts, hobbies, volunteer opportunities and computers. PA MEDI & Link Programs offer free Medicare counseling to older Pennsylvanians. Counselors are specially trained to answer questions and provide objective, easy-to-understand information about Medicare, Medicare Supplemental Insurance, Medicaid, and Long-Term Care insurance.

Home Delivered Meals provide meals delivered weekly that provide ⅓ of the nutritional standards of the U.S. recommended daily allowance. Meals will be provided based on applicant’s current health status, capability of preparing meals for self, and/or lack of available support to assist in meal preparation. Mature Worker Program offers an opportunity for individuals to get the job skills, job leads, and get better paying jobs. This program is meant to offer a “stepping stone” back into the work force, not permanent employment. They offer: on-the-job training, referrals for additional classroom training, and referrals to employers in the community who are seeking the skills you have/will acquire in the program. Finally, they can offer assessment, testing, and counseling if desired or needed. For on-the-job training, individuals are assigned to train at a government or nonprofit agency for 20 hours/week. Individuals will be paid minimum wage by the program for time spent in all authorized training activities. In order to qualify, you must be: at least 55 years old, a resident of Luzerne or Wyoming County, and meet federal low-income guidelines. There may be a waitlist upon applying.
