Neighborhood Legal Services – Butler County

This organization secures justice and resolves fundamental legal problems for those who are low-income and vulnerable by providing high-quality legal services and community legal education. They offer various levels of service on different legal issues. Some individuals may receive representation, others legal advice, and others referrals to available resources. In addition to financial eligibility restrictions, they may limit the scope and/or type of legal assistance offered due to resource limitations. Their types of service are listed below.

Family: custody, divorce, child support, representation for victims of crime and domestic violence, and guardianship.

Housing: landlord-tenant defense, wrongful eviction, tangle titles, public or subsidized housing denials, and utility or security deposit issues.

Consumer: bankruptcy, sheriff and property tax sales, mortgage foreclosures, debt collection, and auto repossession.

Public Benefits:
denials of SNAP, Medicaid, CHIP, TANF, LIHEAP, and unemployment benefits.

Social Security Disability: benefit denials, terminations, overpayments, and underpayments.

Employment: wages claims, criminal record expungement, denial of family and medical leave benefits, workplace discrimination, driver’s license suspensions, and job terminations.

Elder: living wills, healthcare, power of attorney, and victims of physical, emotional, or financial abuse.

Veterans: denial of veteran benefits, military discharge upgrades, prevention of utility shut-offs, and help in resolving housing or debt issues.

Medical Legal Collaborative: secure better health for children by pairing a family in need with an attorney to advocate for the child.

Women’s Impact Network: provides free legal assistance to women in sudden economic distress. They work to foster long-term economic stability by partnering with agencies that provide women with job search training, financial counseling, and education, temporary housing, or emergency funds to address the immediate crisis in addition to needed legal services.

Disability Advocacy for Children and Youth Transitioning to Adulthood: provides free legal assistance to children and young adults with disabilities who need help applying for or keeping social security administration disability benefits. The program supports new applicants, those whose claims were denied, and youth facing age-18 benefit redeterminations or terminations. To apply, families complete an intake form using the child’s information; household income may be considered for minors, while applicants age 18+ report only their own income if they are financially independent.

Project HEALS: addresses homelessness and stabilizes housing for individuals experiencing legal problems causing housing insecurity through targeted outreach, holistic legal services, and social work support.

Civil Legal Aid for Victims of Crime Program: supports direct civil legal services in certain legal matters for crime victims (those who have suffered physical, sexual, financial, or emotional harm) that result from a crime.
