Ready, Willing, and Able – Philadelphia

This is a recovery house for men diagnosed with substance use disorder, with programming lasting 9-12 months. They provide a comprehensive approach to recovery by connecting participants with intensive outpatient providers, medication assisted treatment when appropriate, dormitory-style housing, paid work, vocational training, supported job search, social support services, and life-long graduate services. To graduate, trainees must meet three stringent criteria: long-term recovery, full-time employment, and independent housing. Participants in this program are randomly drug tested twice a week.

Transitional Housing: they offer a supportive environment to work towards permanent self-sufficiency. At this house, participants: work in building maintenance, operations, food service, and other in-house positions; receive three nutritious meals a day; have access to recreational spaces and computer labs; and pay a modest room and board, which helps them form the habit of supporting their own living expenses. Upon graduation, they will help trainees locate housing and prepare them for the obligations of independent living.

Paid Work: after 30 days in the program, men start paid, highly visible work, such as street cleaning or landscaping, and focus on building a work ethic as well as developing the soft skills of employment.

Support Services: most of the support services they offer are optional to participants. Each participant is assigned a case manager, whom they meet regularly with throughout the program. Case managers guide trainees through the program by creating a service plan that sets goals concerning: employment, physical and mental health, and legal and financial issues. Their job readiness department helps each participant by acting as a liaison to employer partners in the region, while also helping them create resumes, learn how to search for a job, and practice their interviewing skills. Their financial management courses teach the basics, such as budgeting and debt reduction. Additional support is available through on- and off-site resources including: Narcotics and Alcoholics Anonymous, relapse prevention, and one-on-one counseling sessions. Their graduate services also offer a grant program, consisting of $1,000 in grant money that is paid out over a five-month period conditioned on passing a drug test and providing rent receipts and pay stubs.
