The Arc of Philadelphia
This organization advocates with and for all children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their families.
Advocacy: for individuals with I/DD, or any family member/friends of someone with I/DD, advocates are available to support. Adult advocates link individuals/families with I/DD to service providers that fit their specific needs. They also offer advice and tips on accessing and navigating services, both through waiver services and private organizations. They provide referrals for: services that involve findings, registering, and placing someone with housing; and services provided by a supports coordinator/supports coordination agency. Child advocates serve non-school age children and school age children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their parents. Child advocates will represent the child and their parent(s) in any meeting with school or agency personnel with the goal of obtaining supportive services for the child.
Health Outreach Project (HOP) Clinic: medical students run a weekly walk-in clinic at The Arc for individuals with intellectual disabilities. They can provide basic health assessments and follow ups with referrals to primary physicians.
HealthMeet: this initiative provides free community-based health assessments and individualized recommendations for follow-up care. Assessments will focus on general health and body composition, vision, hearing, oral health, foot care, respiratory health, mental health and lifestyle factors such as diet and nutrition, physical activity, substance use, and access to health care.
Youth Leadership Program: this program provides youth with disabilities, aged 14-21, with opportunities to build leadership skills through real-life experience. Training, personal development, and mentoring are all a part of this program, as students will have opportunities to mentor, receive training on secondary education, connect to peers through group work and workshops, and participate in civic engagement opportunities. They also hold an annual youth leadership conference, which is a one-day event held in Philadelphia.
Tech Coaching Program: staff demonstrate how individuals with disabilities can use technology to live more independently.
Parent IEP Training Series: a series of video trainings to help parents and family members navigate the complex IEP process, and to better understand the special education and disability services available.
